Working a lot of overtime at work these days. Not much time or creative energy left over for my own stuff. How do people do it? I look around and see so many cool projects being done by people in their spare time and I feel like lazy bum. Sigh.

I’ve got Lirielle on the back burner right now. I had started a sci-fi anime story with a friend before the overtime started. But my day job has really killed progress on that one too. Hopefully I’ll get back on track soon.

A little bit of concept art trying to find the right character design for Lirielle. This one ended up a little too gothic. I think she needs to be a little more Victorian and little more innocent. At least to start out the story.

Just for posterity, here’s a teaser image from D.O.T. that I drew a few years back. This was a project inspired by the Wizard of Oz and taken in a dark sci-fi-fantasy direction. I still like the idea, but now it feels a little derivative. Plus I struggled a little bit with keeping to the structure of the original story.

Lirielle is the evolution of this idea away from the original source.

Still have a lot of polish that could be done on this site’s design and layout. But it’s good enough for now. I’ve got HTML and CSS out of my system and the site looks okay, even if there are still a bunch of little details I’d like to change. But enough of that.

Now that I don’t have my site setup as an excuse anymore, I hope to get back to writing.

Not much to look at yet.

I’ve decided to use WordPress to organize my site. I’m not positive yet if it’s right for what I’d like to do. But it does seem to be easy for me to set up and maintain. The content I’m publishing is an online story, probably broken into chapters with accompanying illustrations. If I’m really ambitious, it’ll include full blown pages of sequential art or even simple animatics.

The right theme to this site feels important to me, so I’m slowly tackling that, learning about WordPress themes.

Meanwhile I’m writing down a lot of notes and ideas for the story, which has evolved from D.O.T., an earlier project I’d been working on. Still not sure where aesthetically I’m going to land. If anything, it feels like there are a lot of possibilities and choosing a path is going to lock me in to a direction that I’m not sure I want locked in yet. So there is a slight bit of procrastination/writer’s block associated with that.

A small start. I’m happy enough that I’ve taken my first step.
